In the winter of 1999, PaintScratch founder Collin Harris learned firsthand just how frustrating it is to find the right touch-up paint.

After accidentally knocking a ski rack onto his Subaru — leaving a scattering of chips across the paint — he called his local dealership to order some matching touch up paint. They didn't have it. Neither did anywhere else he tried. What should have been a simple repair turned into a surprisingly difficult search.

That experience planted a seed. Collin had spent years in the automotive repair industry, founding and operating Car Works Autobody in Boulder, CO, so he understood paint and car care from the inside out. He knew the problem he'd run into wasn't unique — it was something car owners everywhere dealt with every day.

So he built the solution. PaintScratch.com launched with a simple mission: make it easy for anyone to find factory-matched touch-up paint for their exact make and model. No dealership runaround. No guesswork. Just the right color, delivered to your door.

Continuing the legacy

Today, PaintScratch remains a family-run American business, with paint mixed locally in California by our automotive paint experts — professionals with over 50 years of combined experience.

Since 2012, Collin’s son Nick Harris has led PaintScratch’s online operations, bringing the business into the future with the help of his wife, designer Mari Collins Harris. Both father and son live with their families in the beautiful Lake Tahoe area, where they enjoy time outdoors and continue building a company rooted in self-reliance, craftsmanship, and helping people fix things the right way.

At its heart, PaintScratch is still a family business that helps everyday people restore their vehicles with pride.
